I'm Bogged Down!!

Granted, I am a little late with the free quilt pattern this month...however, I've been up to my eyeballs in a sea of paper work! Gotta love year end stuff! Anyway, I can see the end is drawing near on that project...so, expect the directions SOON!!

In between moving mountains of paper, I've been moving mountains of snow! ARGH!! Not a fan of that stuff. Anyway, Nolan came over after school today and he made this BEST EVER snowman. He had so much fun...rocks for the eyes and fresh carrot for the nose. He ran to the front yard and found some sticks for the arms. The scarf...well, I've been wearing that, as recently as yesterday! He names everything, so, this snowman is none other than........FROSTY!!

The boys will be staying at our house next week. Their mom is going to have baby #3!!! Tuesday is the date!! I can't wait. Have you ever heard of such a silly thing...she chose NOT to find out the sex of the child. If I had a dollar for every conversation that we've had that starts like this: "mom, what do you think I am going to have?"...well, I'd be a wealthy American!! (and yes, I'd only be in the 15% tax bracket!!!) Sorry, just had to say that! Think PINK.....Think PINK....Think Pink....I'll keep you posted! I'd settle for blue too! As long as the baby is healthy and mom gets along fine, that is all that really matters!

I've been kicking this idea around in my head...how about a FREE block of the month quilt? The finished size of each of the blocks is 8 inches; for a total finished size 39" x 49". Wouldn't this be a great stash buster? You may need to purchase additional fabric for the sashing and border and binding, or you may opt to dig deep into your stash and see what you have! This project could be stitched in your favorite colorway. Here are a few ideas:

1) Red, white and blue for a patriotic flair

2) red, grey, black, charcoal and tan for that dramatic contemporary feeling

3) chartreuse, grey, black, and charcoal

4)tonal--this could be so soothing!

So, look around in your fabric stash. Pull your favorite colors to make this quilt your own. On Monday, we will begin with block #1, working in the top left hand corner, going across in rows. The 15th of every month, you will get complete cutting and sewing instructions to complete each block. The last block, December 15, 2012 will also include the cutting instructions for sashing, inner and outer border. Let the fun begin!

Sometimes, when we least expect it......we find the PERFECT thing! However, I am getting ahead of myself, so, let me start from the beginning. Since I got a new dining room table, we wanted our niece to have our old one. My husband and I met his brother and wife (niece's mom and dad) at the outlet mall at Medford, Minn. It is a half way spot for both of us and the area also boasts several great places to eat. We had a great time! They needed to get on the road again, so, my husband asked me if I wanted to poke around the mall....

Well, not really looking for clothes; I've got more than I could wear now, but, I agreed and we wandered around the mall. It was such a nice warm January day. Simply perfect weather to be out for a stroll. We both like to go to the Painted Porch, a great little antique shop with gifts and primitives alike. We were checking things out in the shop and chatting it up about how great it was to get rid of the old table; and at the same we said, "wouldn't this be the perfect cupboard for our bedroom!" We bought it, loaded it; and hauled it home. Very heavy...had to get son in law down to help...it was a beast! Now it sits in the bedroom, just like it was meant to be. The tv is perfect on top...we have 1/2 inch to spare! It was meant to be!

Neutral Elegance

Introducing our newest collection of fabric.....Neutral Elegance. The colors are so rich and sophisticated. I am certainly anxious to dig into these! I see a beautiful tonal bed runner. I can picture this at the foot of the bed; laying on top of my lofty white down comforter! I wish my body could endure it; but, I'd like to work on projects like this 24 hours a day for a week! I think my accomplishments would be great; but I know I am not a youngster. Sleep is a good thing.

I've been enjoying my other passion in life...rug hooking. Check out this great rug that I finished over the week end. I will insert the cording and whip and bind it next Thursday and Friday. Tom has another PET scan and more chemo. I need something to occupy my hands and mind while waiting.

New Year; New Beginnings!

Happy New Year! I've settled into my new routine; and have had some time to rest and relax over the holidays. The tree is down; Christmas for 2011 is packed away for another year. The house is quiet and today is the perfect time to catch up on my blogging. I've got a couple of shots of the grandkids....The first is Nolan with his new buddy pillow. These are so super soft; I really wanted one for myself! We tried to match their personalities to the pillow. I think we did good with Nolan; not so sure about Jax.Here is Jax's pillow...when I see a lamb I always think serene. That is NOT Jax!! But, how do you buy wild and crazy? They don't make that into a pillow!

Here is another shot of the boys. Hmmm...wonder how Santa ever decided who was naughty or nice?
And finally, back to business at hand......I've been working on a new design for Valentines Day. Here is block #1. I always do a test block to make sure it looks as good on paper as it does in fabric. With a little luck this block will turn into many; and a new design will emerge. Check back on the progress.

I've got some great news to share with you!! As of Tuesday, December 19, 2011, I will begin to shift my focus back to designing quilt patterns. Since June 2010, I began a new adventure in the corporate world....I was working a part time job. Yes, you did the math correctly, that is 18 months! I was orginally hired to work 20 hours per week. My work load continued to increase, my benefits did not (no holiday pay for this girl). I've been putting in 52+ hours per week for months and months. At night; I'd try to design and work on the business. Do you know what that left over for me? Not much? I knew something had to give, so, I asked for benefits and I was shot down....after all, I was only part time. The final straw was when they told me that my job would be elimated in March (after my daughter returns from maternity leave). Now, I might not be a rocket scientist; but, WHY would you tell an employee that? Isn't that like saying we plan on using you until we are done with you? I realized that I can't get those 18 months back, but, I do know that from this day forward, I am going to take my life back! When I walked out the door for the final time, I knew that I was doing the right thing. The best revenge is to live my life, and do it well!!! Good bye corporate world; hello again my old friend...quilting. I am so blessed to have a supportive husband that believes in me. I sadly miss not working beside my wonderful daughter every day. She is a gem, but, we are still best friends and she supports my decision 110%. I miss the friends that I made, but, they will always be my friends.

So, here's to new beginnings..... I got the best Christmas present of all; it doesn't have a big bow or shiny paper.

On Tuesday eve, my husband and I attended our grandson's pre-school program. Look at this BIG bunch of children. See the only child that is waving??? Yes, that is correct, that is my grandson! (And, NO, that is not my hand up in the air waving...I was just behind this person, and I was waving! Sorry, grandchildren make me loose my senses; and I do wild and crazy things) I was able to get a close up shot of the little guy. Isn't that turkey headband just the best?

My dad has been on a roll buying me "old junk". That's what he says...hey I found some more old junk that I thought you might like! Gotta love it. Check out this wonderful sled that he picked up at an auction for me. My husband fixed up the bed just a bit, and I found this "seat" in my closet. Actually, the "seat" was used in my office set up. It once held a printer that was stacked above another printer. I thought it worked just perfect re-purposed as a seat on my antique sled. Over the week end, we got some fresh snow. The perfect accessory for my new old sled!

Moving along to Christmas; how about this new Poinsettia design? I love an Irish chain and this quilt really says Christmas. Again, this will soon be posted to the web site.

And finally, Jessica's Spools. This quilt is a special design for my husband's Doctor. Dr. Jessica is the sweetest care provider we could ask for. She is compassionate and kind. She was so interested in my business; so, I thought I should make her a small table square. Se was very touched that I'd make her a quilt! We gave this to her two weeks ago. While I was running an errand; one of the nurses stopped me in the hall and told me how much she adored the quilt that I had made for Dr. Jessica. She also told me that they were all very touched with my story behind the spool design. (The spools in the quilter world are filled with thread; we use them to stitch our bits of fabric together to make a quilt. The spools may empty from time to time, but, we are able to load a new spool and continue on with our stitching. In the medical world, the spools represent the drugs and care provided for my husband; one flows seamlessly to the next. We hope when one spool empties; another will be waiting to help him. ) I have also been asked to design a quilt for Mayo Clinic to hang in the cancer center. Since my husband has colon cancer, I will use royal blue. I've got the design sketched out; and am very happy with it. I turned to the beautiful architectural features of the many buildings in the Mayo Clinic complex. It got the thumbs up approval from my husband. It feels good to be able to give back; even in this small way. I'll post photos as the quilt blocks begin to take shape.

I realized that I didn't post photos of the Halloween tree; nor photos of the boys this year. Here are my two little buddies! They had a great time hauling in the treats.I also got a Halloween treat! Look at the great cart that my dad made for me! I showed him a color photo and he did the rest. I love the wheels!! They came from my Grandpa Honken's corn picker!! How cool is that? The wood, was recycled from our deck and fence when we did the home renovation. We are so lucky that Dad lets us take all of our cast offs down to his place and he stores them. He always says, sure I'll take that stuff; you never know when it will come in handy. Thanks dad...I just love this cart!!!

I know...this is hard for many people to believe; but, my husband and I went to this concert. He was in his element! Rock and Roll at its finest. I joined in the fun; realizing that we need to do things together (other than going to the doctor!). It was really a shame to waste the $60 ticket on me. I've never heard of them or really any of their songs....I asked my husband what was with everyone wearing sunglasses!....later, I found out that one of their hit songs was Cheap Sunglasses! Oh my....I know I should stick to what I know best! I went; had a good time, and asked my questions on the way home. It was better that way; after the sunglasses episode, I learned my lesson.

I am crazy about the Gee's Bend quilts. I purchased this kit; and this one is complete and ready to take to the machine quilter. I really like the strong colors; and then finally the addition of the soft cream outer right and left border. This quilt was fast and easy; perfect fun project!
I am a HUGE fan of anything Halloween! Check out the newest door dressing, Mrs. Bud Bonz. The bones actually glow in the dark...Isn't that wild? I made my grandson's a male version of this; and of course, that quilt is called Mr. Bud Bonz! They got an exclusive; private design just for their bedroom door. The boys LOVE him!

My husband is going through chemo; I think this is something like the 15th one. We arrived at Rochester Mayo Clinic at 7:00 a.m. and we were finally done at 11:30. We planned on a fun trip to the Mississippi River. Here are a few shots of us enjoying our time together.
Here's my sweetie; the toughest, strongest person I've ever known! Notice, he is wearing his 48 hour chemo bag! He is a fighter!! Check out the river behind him.
Here we are together; enjoying our fun week end get-away!. Again the Mississippi is behind us.

On Sunday, we returned to Mayo Clinic....for yet another shot of neulasta and to be de-accessed. He gets real tired of dragging that chemo bag around with him....but, I remind him that he is lucky...he is able to drag it around. Two weeks ago, he went on a motorcycle trip with his buddies to Milwaukee...and drug that bag around with him! See what I mean....he is a strong person. Please keep those prayers coming our way. We appreciate them!

June Updates

It has been a while; and thought you might enjoy a snippet of what's new. This little design is so fun; and it also fits on the star hanger.....I couldn't help myself! Growing up in the 70's; it was all about Flower Power! This design just begged for the addition of the blue peace sign. I see the peace sign everywhere and thought it would be fun to include it into a quilt design. You know what they say; everything old is new again!

My husband has recovered from his spinal surgery. He is finished with radiation. He is still going through chemo. He has actually returned to work; and is back to leading a full life with cancer in it. We know that none of this wouldn't be possible without the support of the prayers from everyone. We appreciate it so much.

Last week, I took a another dear family member to Rochester for a second opinion on some health issues. Unfortunately, she has been diagnosed with brain cancer. It is so sad how many lives are touched by this horrible disease.

Please continue to keep my family in your prayers. We believe in the power of prayers.

Thought I'd share our latest snowstorm with you....I am not a fan of snow; but isn't this beautiful? In north Iowa, we often have strong winds, so, just seeing this snow sitting on the tree branches is almost a rare event for us. All of this white precipitation has since melted; and we are once again having temps in the mid 40's....a sure sign of what's to come.

I also want to share my latest rug hooking project with you. I spend most evenings sitting with my husband, watching tv and rug hooking. I will add the cording and yarn in the near future, but, for now this one is added to my collection of rugs that need cording.

Spring, robins, and hope

Are you ready for spring? I saw my first robin; and I can honestly say, I can't remember when I've been so excited to see a "bird"....but, we all know that robins are not just any "bird"...they signal the beginning of spring in our neck of the woods!! By the time June rolls around, we are so used to seeing them; we don't notice. We also get a little tired of their constant chirping and singing; especially early in the morning....but, right now, their melody is wonderful.

Over the week end; I decided we needed a bit of cheer at our household....so, I whipped up a new door banner, Happy Easter. It will be on the web site later this week...so, be sure to look for it.

My husband continues to get stronger every day. He no longer naps; and he has cut his pain medication in half! Soon, he will begin the long road of chemo and radiation. We decided that the first robin sighting of the year was symbolic to his recovery; a new beginning of a season filled with hope. Thanks for your continued prayers......it means the world to us.

Yes, I am sure of it...Nolan is showing grandpa a thing or two about his lap top!!

I had to share this sweet photo of Jax and Grandpa!! The boys don't understand the whole neck brace thing; nor do they like it very much. They think that Grandpa went into the hospital to have his tonsils taken out...and when his throat gets better; he won't need the brace anymore. Don't you love the way kids think? Recovery is progressing along; but the best medicine is enjoying the company of the sweet boys! Exactly what Grandpa needs!!

Miracles happen every day; and I am happy to report that I was able to take my husband home, Wednesday, February 23rd. He was released from the hospital by 10:00 a.m. and I had him home in bed by 12:00 noon. He was up walking around less than 24 hours after surgery; able to manage his pain orally; and also able to eat solid food! While his recovery was remarkable; even to the surgeon's, he still has a long and difficult journey ahead of him. We are taking each day as they come; not trying to get too far ahead of ourselves. We've found that an illness can certainly show the strength of a marriage...it is difficult for both of us, but, we know that together we can do anything. Thanks for all of your prayers of support for us; please continue to include us in your prayers as we begin the next journey...the road to recovery and down the path to chemo and radiation. It will be filled with bumps in the road; but, we are very hopeful.

I do want to share a couple of photos with you of how I was able to fill the long, difficult hours of waiting! I feel so blessed to have something to do with my hands....it truly has been a lifesaver...so, here is my finished list:

1) Six quilts bound for C&T Publishing!! (sorry, can't show the fronts of the quilts...they are top secret!!)

2) one cat hooked rug; cording inserted, edges whipped and twill tape to finish...this takes almost as long to finish a rug this way as it does to hook it!!

3) Tulip Basket hooked rug, whipped and bound...

4)and finally my FAVORITE rug whipped and bound!

These projects have special meaning to me...I will always treasure these pieces; they helped me through a difficult time in my life. Isn't it great to have a hobby that is therapy? How about you; can you relate to this?

Latest Updates

My husband went through surgery on Monday. He was admitted at 8:00 a.m. and was finally delivered to intensive care at 9:00 p.m. that evening. He endured a long and difficult surgery. The surgeon said to date; it was the third most difficult surgery performed this year. (My husband says....aw, it is only February!) She was able to remove most of the tumor; and he will need radiation on that spot for further treatment.

Yesterday, was a great day for him. He was walking laps around the halls; eating on his own, managing his pain with wonderful success. Last night, he ate a big dinner, and did more laps. They came into his room; and said he was doing so well that he could wander any place he wanted within St. Mary's!

Today...he is going home! His surgeon just met with him. She said, "Wow, I am shocked at how good you look...you look better than the day I met you in my office! Sir...you are free to go home!"

Granted, we still have a very difficult journey yet to get through. We are up for the challenge and we are blessed to have a strong support system and our faith. Thanks so much for your prayers; please don't stop...we will need them for a long time! Your prayers have helped us to achieve this; and we are hoping together we will get a miracle for Tom.

Update on my husband

Here is the latest on the condition of my husband. He was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer yesterday. He has a tumor on his spine. That tumor will be removed Monday in an emergency surgery. It was also discovered that he has another tumor on his hip ball & socket joint; which has caused a fracture. So, far, he is able to walk with no pain. We are very impressed with speed that Mayo clinic has moved on his case. Chemotherapy and radiation will begin as soon as he is strong enough to handle it from the surgery. His doctor is very hopeful. While we realize he will not be able to cure him; he has promised to help him. I will be thankful when the tumor is gone in his upper back; as he is in constant pain. Please continue to keep us in your prayers. Miracles do happen; and our family so desperately needs one. Thanks for your support.

Today's post is not about quilting...no photos...no silly fun. It is all serious, somber and scary.

I am asking all of my quilt friends to say a prayer for my husband. We are at Mayo Clinic doing testing. He has a tumor on his back, below his neck. Please take the time to include our family in your daily prayers. We find comfort in the support. It means so much.

Baby Update!

A dear friend of mine pointed out that I've left all of my readers hanging about my new darling little grand-niece. Well, she is doing fine; still in St. Mary's Hospital but here are the latest photos of this precious little muffin. Brenna has surpassed her birth weight.

Looks like the little girl has a good set of lungs on her!!

And finally, dad with his precious, sweet little girl. Doesn't every picture just make you say, "ahhh!" Aren't babies the best? It is so neat to see these two together. I remember when I used to hold Brenna's daddy in my arms...pretty neat how life really is full circle.

Oh My is right....have you heard the saying confessions are good for the soul? Well...you are going to love this one. Yes, it does have something to do with a crock pot.

Bet you are thinking my crock pot looks a lot like yours...nothing special, but, love it just the same, right? Well...I was taking pulled pork sandwiches to a potluck. I had cooked the meat the day before. Shredded it later that evening, and added the barbecue sauce. I then stuck the prepared meat in the removable insert from the crock pot and refrigerated it.

Later that evening, I had charged my cell phone and when I was getting ready for bed, I threw my cell phone in the bottom of the crock pot. I didn't want to bother putting my cell phone in my purse; I knew I surely see it sitting there; and that would save me a few steps...besides, I was dog tired and wanted to get a good night's sleep.

Don't you love my bright cell phone? How could a girl miss this?
I know...my cell phone isn't anything special....no bells and whistles, but, thank you very much; I LOVE it. (And, I know how to operate it!). I am sure by now, you've figured there is a but coming. Of course I missed seeing my cell phone sitting in the bottom of the crock pot in the morning. I pulled the pulled pork out of the refrigerator, arrived at my destination, turned the crock pot on high....even went back a couple of times added more barbecue sauce, stirred the meat, added more sauce. The sandwiches were a hit! I unplugged my crock pot and arrived home about 5:00 that evening. And.....when I took the ceramic insert out....what do you suppose was laying in the bottom of the crock pot???

And the best part...all I had to do was charge my battery; and the pink beauty is alive and well and I am chatting away. Notice at the very bottom of the phone...looks like some writing... that is the warning from the crock pot...says: "caution....unit becomes very hot and can cause serious burns" Indeed! I've got someone new in my life; and I want everyone to meet her! This is Brenna Sadie-Lynne. She was born yesterday, December 20. She weighs 3 pounds, 12 ounces...and 16 1/2" long. She was born in Methodist Hospital at Rochester and is the daughter of my nephew and his wife. Brenna's mom was having a terrible time regulating her HIGH blood pressure and an emergency c-section was performed. The baby is about 30 weeks old. She is sure a tiny bundle, isn't she? Everyone is doing well now. The baby is in a little bubble; and only getting 25% oxygen. She is breathing without a ventilator. (Those are some pretty good lungs for such a tiny girl, don't you think?) This definately calls for a new baby quilt!

The mom and dad made all of us wait in suspense to find out if it was a girl or boy. Not too many people do that anymore; but, this element of surprise was sure fun. She is a blessing; and I am betting her parents got the best Christmas gift of all!

Spelling Bee

Yesterday was a very productive day at my house. Lots of book work was cleaned up as well as printing a few patterns. I had the pleasure of picking up my 5 year old from pre-k yesterday. We always chat about who he played with and whether he got in trouble...you know the usual stuff. His mind is so curious and he likes to spell words. We'd been going through so many words, my mind was beginning to be a blank. We'd done car, cat, dog, foot, shoe, no, good, food, hand, etc...finally I said, "How do you spell we?" Nolan answers, "WII". Indeed. Have a good week end.

I've got some new designs to share with you. Dear Santa is a fun design. It measures 18" x 54" and it is designed to hang on the rustic star hanger. Looks so good on the front door! It is fast; easy and all about fun. I traced Nolan's hand for Santa's beard. (Don't have your own favorite five year old? Nolan granted me permission for his hand to be included in every pattern!) I just finished this new table runner last night. The size is 26" x 74". It adds a simple touch to the dining room table and truly completes the room. It is on the web site as well. Just look under the What's New Category.

In case you are wondering, the new tree remains un-decorated!

Christmas Decorating!

Last Saturday, after cleaning the house for days (just to make the place look presentable for Thanksgiving!!)and cooking 6 hours non stop for the Thanksgiving feast (which by the way was gobbled up in less than 20minutes...what is that about??), I decided it was time to decorate the new tree that I ordered. I was sewing one hot, muggy Saturday in July and watching QVC. They had Christmas in July and they were offering the most beautiful trees I'd ever seen! Wow, they just set a tree up in less than three minutes! I was on line faster than I've done anything in quite some time. I was feeling so smug about my new 7.5 foot blue spruce fully decorated with 700 lights. I could see the glow; and I pushed the "submit order" tab and did a little happy dance! It was mine and would be delivered by Nov 25. Now, you must know there is a big BUT coming, right? So, here goes.....that tree weighed close to 50 pounds. I managed to get it down into the family room from the garage. I cut off the strapping tape and there it lay...the most beautiful tree! I am setting up the stand, inserted the first section of the tree. Moving on the next section...looking good. I've got it plugged in and the white lights were twinkling; even my husband is sitting up now (from his normal recline....with the tv remote!!) Oh, one more section to go. I push, shove, push some more...and the top section wouldn't go into the center pole! Of course, this means the top section of the tree won't light up. My disgust got my husband up off the sofa and he checks it out. Tells me that he could fix it; but, he'd have to cut into the center pole to accomplish this. Now, I am getting mad! I called customer service and lucky for QVC there was such a nice lady on the other end. She apologized for my trouble and said that she would have UPS pick up the defective tree on Monday. She also informed me they could not send a replacement tree; as their stock had sold out. GRR! So, I toss the tree into the box, tape it up and lug it back to the garage. That sure diminished my Christmas spirit! I was a little crabby. I finally decided it didn't do me any good to pout, so, I started to decorate the rest of the house. Let me share some photos with you.............

I added a few greens and some gift box decorations to my quilt rack.
This smaller tree is in the dining room. Green and red poinsettia picks, some silver balls and a bit of garland to complete this one.

By the time Sunday hit, the house was no longer spic and span clean! I've got a little Christmas scattered everywhere and boxes stacked high. But, I did accomplish something! I was finally ready to go shop for another tree..... I scored one! Note that the tree remains un-decorated!

Veteran's Day

I thought I'd share a few quick family updates with you....remember my baby brother who was endured 12 hours of surgery after a farming accident in early August? Well...bless his heart; he was released by the doctors to return to his normal routine...he can go to work, he can drive, he can do cart wheels! He definately has lots to be thankful for; and if he ever forgets it, I am going to remind him!

Since I can't share any of the current sewing projects; as they are for an upcoming publication....I'll just share some new photos of the boys. Nolan is so cute in his Iowa jersey. My husband and I are so happy he is an Iowa fan!!! (I don't think he is very loyal however...he asked me for an Iowa State jersey the other day!! What's that all about?) I snapped this picture of Jaxson over the week end. I was so thankful he finally caved into the idea of a nap; I gave up on the notion of making him take off his hat! This photo will be a good one to drag out someday when he brings his girlfriend to meet grandma! Oh, I LOVE pay backs!!

Ok, I must admit it; I am a "junker" at heart! Look what I found on the side of the street! It is an old buffet and as you can see it isn't in the best shape. I cut a piece of plywood for the bottom for a shelf. This will hold baskets! And below, is my finished product! I added some new knobs and a fresh coat of black paint. Looks pretty good and it will be the perfect addition to my office.

and this one....can't you see his big brother saying, "Hey Jaxson, get back here! Where are you going?"The boys helped me decorate a tree for Halloween. It turned out so cute; I really don't want to take it down. We added purple and orange lights and a witches hat for the tree topper. Over the years, I've received many Halloween ornaments from friends for my tree....it is so much fun to get them out and remember those thoughtful friends.

I added this to the kitchen counter top. I love the fiesta plate that I purchased this summer. Looks so good with the fall leaves.

I should take down all of these decorations today; but, I plan on working on a project for That Patchwork Place! They contacted me to see if I'd be interested in doing a project for their upcoming book, Homemade Gifts. I've got a couple of ideas racing in my head; but, now the trick is to get them to work out! I've been told that my blog is suffering; so, I've decided to begin with my two very favorite little people! They look like the best friends in this photo. I am sure five minutes before I snapped this one I was breaking up at least my third fight between the boys. They take turns being naughty; but, when you are three and five; you can act that way, right? They are really my favorite subject to chat about!

Do you love GIANT pumpkins??!!! I do! I want to buy a pair for the front of the house; but, I can't figure out how to get a 75# giant moved to the front of the house. I've taken the easier way out; and stitched up this quilt with giant pumpkins...and no sore muscles !!

And finally....I love this one too....the scrappy border and the over-size pineapples and my favorite pieced saltbox house.

Check it out; the purse is complete. I think a big button, perhaps with some rhinestones, would be so fab on this bag; but, all that my button box held was a tonal black one. I thought it turned out pretty good. It was a fun process and I am glad that I challenged myself to design this. I've made some notes for the next ones; as it is still a work in progress. I'd be proud to carry this bag. It's got it all; style, class and a little bling! For me, this bag has it all!

A New Project

Ok, I must admit it; this is somewhat out of my normal "comfort zone" colorway! And this chic combination of fabrics isn't going to be a quilt! By now, I've really got your attention, don't I? Are you sitting on the edge of your seat? What is it going to be?

You got it! A purse! I've drawn up my pattern on paper and have begun to cut out the shapes. This is going to be a prototype for the newest line of fabric, Farmgirls Garden. Check the blog later this week to see the finished product! Wish me luck!

Pumpkins

Over the week end; I purchased a grapevine pumpkin wired with white lights. I've paired it with a quilt that recently appeared in Quilter's World. Notice the witch's hat on the railing. I love fall! What isn't there to like about the season? The temperatures cool down, the pumpkins are ripe, crisp apples can be found at road side stands and orchards.

Speaking of apples, what is your favorite? I love a good honey crisp! I wish the season was longer for those sweet treats.

Autumn has Arrived

Yesterday, the first day of Autumn arrived. Doesn't it seem like only yesterday summer began? Anyway, the blog has suffered during the summer "vacation", so, it is high time to kick things up. I've been doing just a little decorating for fall.

I've also got two new door dressings to share with you. Again, these are 18" x 46" and they use the same wonderful star hanger that we sell on the web site. Class Reunion Time!

How do you like class reunions? It can be an anxious event, don't you agree? Well, myself and two other classmate were feeling just that way! Last Saturday, we decided to start our day off with pedicures and manicures. (After all; a girl needs to feel a little pampered...when your nails look good; you look good!) We included a bit of shopping and then a lazy lunch! What a great day.

Later that afternoon, my shopping/pedicure buddies stopped for pre-reunion cocktails (I call it courage in a bottle....I can do anything better with one margarita!) As a group, we went to the Hillside Country Club to meet up with our other fellow classmates. Isn't there something about the apprehension of walking into an event? So much pressure; perhaps I should have lost some weight, or changed my hair, or worn something different...you know; we've all been there! But, once that door swung open; it was like we were all kids again! So much laughing, sharing, and catching up. The evening was over in the blink of an eye! What a great time! We didn't get home until 1:00 a.m.; and honestly, I wished we could have stayed longer...just so much to say; so much to share!

On Monday, the class mates who were still around, gathered again for the annual parade in town. The gathering spot for the parade was in front of the high school. It sure brought back memories of the old days! Check out the photo below of all of us...don't we look like a happy group? How about a little give away fun that you can join in on? New Week; not much news..

Good Morning! Here it is the last week of August; September will arrive on Wednesday! Where has summer gone? I've attached a photo of the fruits of my "garden"; which consists of two tomato plants. Wow....don't they look good? There is nothing finer than a small cherry tomato warmed by the sun. They are so warm, juicy and good. Unfortunately, I don't have many of the small cherry tomatoes. Every time I walk past the plant, I eat them. So good! They rarely make it to a salad. I wonder if Tom thinks it is odd that those cherry tomato plants don't produce like the other plant? Maybe next year, I should buy two cherry plants...one for me and one for him. I fear they would both become mine...guess I will stick to one plant and keep him wondering!

Big sigh of relief; the quilts are finished for That Patchwork Place. The book is going to have a farm girl theme. I've come up with few titles for the quilts; Midnight Goldenrod.....Blue Harvestor Baskets, and Red Clover. If you are a true farm girl; all of those titles will immediately make you think of FARM life. Today, I am going to write some directions and perhaps sit on the balcony and enjoy the last days of summer. Have a great Sunday!

Not such a good start to the week....

Well....here goes another week....My husband called me at 1:30 this afternoon to tell me that he'd been in a traffic accident. He said that a car turned directly in front of him, crossing his lane of travel. You know I love to take photos....so, here they are....doesn't look like a bright red shiny truck anymore, does it? The top is pretty banged up....my husband hit his head on the cab when he finally was able to get free of the seat belts. Seat belts are a good thing!! It saved two lives today!

My husband is resting now. I am the luckiest woman alive to be married to such a great guy. Instead of thinking of himself; he wanted to go visit the guy who was also in the accident. Tom was so happy to see that he was sitting up in the hospital bed. He has been all stitched up and is going to make a full recovery as well. Pretty remarkable considering he is a 92 year old man!! You know, it is times like this that can make a person realize how fragile life is and how it can change in an instant! Remember to take time to enjoy your life; and never take the people in your life for granted; for all too soon it could all vanish...in the blink of an eye!

Progress on the new book

I know my posts have been sparse this summer. I wanted to share with you the stack of quilts that I am taking to my machine quilter this morning......Yes that is five (5) quilts! And if you think I am a slacker.........

Here is the color plan for the next one! Hmm...do you think it will be a fall/Halloween one? I've got this one and one other table square and I will be done with That Patchwork Place! I do love a deadline; September 15 for these quilts. Ok...enough chatting; I've got work to do and a deadline to meet! Have a great week end!

To Honor the Memory of a fellow quilter!

This is a rather sad post; and is also a time to honor the memory of a dear friend, Charla Sackmann. I first became aquainted with Charla when we hosted our first annual Main Street Sewing Retreat. She attended many of them through the years; and I always enjoyed her bubbly personality! I do find it difficult to imagine why her life was cut short so quickly. This image of the butterfly is dedicated to her memory. She is on another mission now; but, I know she is smiling down on all of us! Good bye Charla. Rest in peace.

August updates

Granted, it has been a while since my last post. Funny how life can change in the blink of an eye! That is exactly what has happened to my family. August 6, I received a phone call at 12:04 a.m. from my sister in law. She explained to me that my brother was on his way up to St Mary's hospital, via helicopter. (St. Mary's Hospital at Rochester, Minnesota). He had been in a farm accident and things weren't so good. My life began to stand still for those moments....I called my dad and we headed up to Rochester. We arrived about 2:30 a.m. and headed up to the trauma intensive care unit. There I found my brother; alert, but in extreme pain. The doctors decided he needed immediate surgery to repair his broken back. He was taken down to surgery at 2:10 p.m. and surgery was finally completed at 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning. The good news was this....he survived 12 hours or surgery...he has rods and pins in his back and he will be able to resume a full and active life! All the experts agree; he should have been paralyzed, but, someone has a much bigger plan for him! He was up walking the next day...here is a photo of him with his nurse, Jim. My brother wouldn't like this very much to know that I've put his photo on my blog; but, I am so proud of him. Here's to a speedy recovery my sweet brother! I love you to the moon and back!

Summer Vacation

Sometimes a summer vacation is a destination close to home; and a state of mind! A few weeks ago, my husband and I headed to McGregor, Iowa. McGregor is a quaint little town nestled in the bluffs along the Mississippi River. It is just a few hours away from home; but, I feel like I am a million miles away from home. I find the lazy river to be relaxing. Let me share some photos of our trip with you.

The photo below is a "tug" of barges going north up the river.Here is a sail boat on Lake Pepin......so beautiful!
This is my FAVORITE, FUN place to eat while in McGregor! You can sit on the deck; literally on the Mississippi River! Everything tastes better here!

These lily pads looked so great in the river....I love the bright shade of green and the shape...always thinking of new quilt designs. Very inspirational!

I've been stitching along as fast as I can on the newest book that we are working on for That Patchwork Place. We've decided this book will have a farm girl's theme! Won't that be interesting? I thought I'd share one block of the quilt; and as you can see, it has lots of piecing! I can't share any more than this one block....just a teaser.

As I was stitching on the final borders tonight, baby Jax was standing beside me and watching my every move. He was making "tractor" sounds as my machine was purring along. I stopped to cut some more strips of fabric; and he asked if my sewing machine ran out of diesel fuel. Now...how cute is that? The entire time I've been stitching this quilt, I've been trying to think of a catchy title. This block reminds me of the fields around Christmas time; the corn and beans have been harvested and the black soil has been turned (or plowed), but the first dusting of snow doesn't completely cover the black earth. Can you see the similarity? This quilt is going to be given to Jaxson, complete with a label that will remind him of the wonderful afternoon we spent together in my sewing room, including filling my machine with fuel!

Friday marks a special day!!! My favorite 2 year old will turn 3!!!! Doesn't he just look like the perfect angel? So sweet....he just makes me want to kiss him everytime I see him!

He helped his mom bake cupcakes to take to day care. Each cupcake was decorated with a special touch from Jax...pink sprinkles, purple sprinkles, and some red sprinkles....everyone gets a special cupcake. How thoughtful! Don't they look good?

And finally....if you think for one moment that he is this perfect little angel...always kind and thoughtful........well......guess again! This photo below says it all! Happy Birthday Jax, and many, many more!

I have officially declared WAR!!

This year, I planted three tomato plants in my back yard. Now, remember, last year, I couldn't get to my back yard due to the construction/renovation of our home. That means, I've gone TWO (2) years without a fresh, juicy, sweet tomato! That is a LONG time! I was mowing lawn this morning and out of the corner of my eye, I spied something red...oh, could it be.....oh yes!! Tomatoes!! I could taste them already...warm from the sun, juicy, wonderful goodness!! I've got bacon frying, toast in the oven kind of feeling deep in my belly.........I shut the mower off and was going to pluck them...there were two!!

You know what's coming don't you........You just have to know there is a BUT coming!!! Well here goes: The first one was rotten; full of black picnic bugs....those pesky little devils....I reached for the next one.......ah..looks so good! Turned it over in my hand.........and what do I see? Full of black picnic bugs! I have declared open war on them. I am in full battle zone! If they get in my way; they will be a casualty! They may have gotten the first two; but, they won't get any more! I have dibs on the rest of the bounty!!

July News!!

I have a couple of secrets to share...but, if I share, they are no longer secrets are they? Well....

what the heck! Looks like we will be doing another book for That Patchwork Place!! How exciting is that? It is going to have a Farm girls' theme. After all, we are both farm girls. I looked at the accepted proposal again last night. It is going to be a wonderful book! The quilts are so fresh and exciting! However, they need to be done by September 2010!!! AH!!! That means, quilting, directions, etc....WOW! With that being said; please NO complaining when the blog hasn't been updated! I just won't have it! I've been slaving over the sewing machine.

Tomorrow, I am taking the day off! No work for me!! What do I intend to do? Well....first thing is to roll out of bed, slam down a diet coke and a granola bar...then off to the shower and dash to the court house to renew my drivers license. (I sure hope I have a good hair day tomorrow...I usually look like some alien from space; and then I have to keep that dorky photo id for years!) I remember the last time I got it renewed....I know the gal who works in the court house. Bless her heart; she tried her best to get a good photo, but, after three attempts...well, it was as good as it was going to get!

The rest of the day is going to be mine to do exactly as I please! I am going to Des Moines shopping....oh, the Pottery Barn, Sephora, and I have to do a William Sonoma!! If there is time, Pier One as well! To complete my day, I am having dinner and drinks at my favorite Mexican spot! What is the occasion? Well....

On Birthday's, calories don't count! I'm going to enjoy every delicious bite!! Happy Birthday to me!

My Summer Project

I thought I'd share my latest project with you. I didn't get a photo of all of the strips that I'd cut previously; but this is a small portion. I've been collecting black prints, gray toned prints and black and white prints for years; and this is the perfect project to use them in. I've cut them into strips...stacks and stacks of them!

Ah, finally blocks from the strips! Hmmm....don't you wonder what this is going to be?

I get quilt inspiration from flowers....weather it be an applique shape or simply the color combinations. My theory about color is this; if you see it in nature; you will never go wrong with combining those same colors in fabric! Hope you were inspired.

I've been a bad blogger; but, I honestly don't have anything much to talk about. I got a new camera, so these shots are taken immediately after I opened the box. Who reads directions, right? I figured out how to put the batteries in and then I just played with it. Looking forward to getting some great shots over the summer, and I am excited to use it on quilts! Isn't the petunia grand?

Another retreat is over! The week end goes by so fast! Thought you might enjoy a few photos of the fun table decorations! We had a DIVA theme this year; so it was pink and black every where.

I've got everything packed away and things are somewhat back to normal at my house. This evening, my oldest grandson stopped by for a visit. I was boxing up a hundred patterns to send to a distributor....Nolan asked what I was doing. I told him, and then he said, "Is that from your treatment?"...I said..."Treatment? What do you mean?" He said, "You know, from your week end?" Oh my...out of the mouths of children....so, what do you think ladies, did we have a treatment or what? It was great! Thanks for coming and making it so memorable!

I lined them and added drapery weights and was quite pleased with the end results. Check them out..... these are in my office. I bought this fabric at quilt market a year ago....These took forever to complete! I matched the pattern repeat as well and it certainly is simple straight stitching but there are many layers to deal with and oh so much measuring! I could have purchased them, but, I've not had the best luck lately with that. One panel is 4" shorter than the first one. Not the look I was going for. Guess drapery curtains are difficult to make in the factory as well.

These are brown silk dupioni in the family room. Glad these are done too!

Here are my herb garden photos......after working so hard to get the yard planted with grass seed, I wasn't about to rip it up to start a garden. I've got these two pots on the ground patio. I've got a little cilantro, thyme, lavender, chives, rosemary and basil. The basil looks really tough! I'd find a new plant, but, all of the garden centers near me are out. Hope this spindly basil plant makes it. I don't have much hope for it.

I finally finished my cat rug! This was so much fun to do! The cat reminds me of our first cat, Buddy. Next is my least favorite part of rug hooking...finishing! I have a friend who says you can't say a rug is done until you finish it! There always has to be somebody who knows how to burst your bubble, right?

How was your week end? The weather in North Iowa was PERFECT!!! I managed to fill my three days with a little work and a little play; a nice mix. We celebrated my dad's 78th annual birthday celebration on Saturday night. Good food and good company....but, the time goes by so fast!

I did get my doors painted and some flowers planted. Here is a photo of the back door. Isn't that a wild shade of green? I loved it so much, I painted the front door the same.

Take a few chances

Yesterday was filled with paper work! Isn't there more and more every day? Wouldn't it be great if we could just forget that? However, I did manage to find time to go to pre-school graduation party to watch my favorite five year old! Those kids are so adorable! The gym is filled with parents, grandparents, siblings and other adults....now imagine how imtimidating that could be to a little five year old! They sang songs, clapped, danced and showed off what they learned during the year. They even spoke into the microphone and told all of us their names...some were very soft and shy and some were very loud! After the graduation was all over, my grandson walked up to the microphone and said in a very loud voice, "Hello!" You know it cracked everyone up! His mom and dad sunk lower into their seats. His parents pulled him aside later and said he was very naughty for doing that. Now think about that for a minute......back in the day, and even today, would you have done something like that? Nope, not me, cause I've always been busy trying to please, or fit in, or what ever. Isn't it great that kids can be so candid, especially in a large group like that?

Here are a few photos of the booth at Quilt Market. Of course, Tammy and I would say that the photos of us aren't so good....so, just check out all of the quilts! They are awesome!!

Notice the wooden stars hanging in our booth...how fun. The sign, it is a door hung on it's side by the hinges. The door insert has been painted in chalkboard paint. Market is a lot of hard work! Long days that run into the evening for many days. Of course a good deal of it is re-connecting with friends and clients and also networking to increase sales! This is a great job!

We are home now; and deep into our daily grind! We have much to do!

And I am off to market!

Tomorrow, bright and early, we will be northbound on I-35 headed to International Quilt Market. I am packed and ready to go...clothes have been selected (what a job!...and what a mess I make....a girl has to try on every single outfit, select the right shoes, the right jewelry.) I don't know why I make such a fuss; I bet not one single person will recall what I wore. And if clothes weren't enough to worry about; then I start to worry about the quilts...wondering if they are good enough....wondering if I should have dug deeper within myself to create something better!) But, I've put that behind me....I'm living for the moment! This afternoon, one of my favorite little people asked if I would attend his pre-school bike ride!

New projects to share......

I've got some new quilting projects that I thought you might enjoy. Remember the pink and black Options quilt posted a couple of days ago? Well this is another color way. This one will go at the foot of my bed, but, it looks good in the white wicker chair too! This pattern is called Stars and Bars. Very fun.

The quilt below is called Square Bars and it is another pattern in the Options Series. Over the week end, I am hoping to get a red, white and blue one. I think I'll add stars to the squares! Won't that be a fun one?

Finally, the framed piece below is the last in the design in the Options series, Initially Yours. I've placed mine at the end of a long hallway going to the bedroom. It looks so wonderful there. But, imagine it in your favorite colors....red, white, blue, or pink and black for all of you divas, or shades of black and grey...the possibilities are endless. Wouldn't this be a perfect wedding gift? The frame is a standard poster frame 12" x 36" found in almost any store that sells picture frames.

Oh my what a way to start the day! My two darling grandsons arrived before 7:00 a.m. As some of you may know, I am not really much of a morning person. I like to wake up slowly and not talk for at least 15 minutes after I get out of bed. Not today! I was still in the shower...hurry up, dry off and dash out to see them. They looked at me like I was some kind of wild woman with this wet hair sticking out everywhere! What is the first order of business? Food.....ah, that is easy, Fruit Loops...I get the bowls set out; add the milk (I did a sniff test on the milk; cause who knows!) I run back to the bedroom to dry my hair and pretty soon, Nolan is tapping me..."Hey grandma, breakfast doesn't taste so good!" What in the world....I think they are messing with me, so, I take a big bite. YUK! The milk was bad! It said April 18; I thought it was April 21...well no wonder it tastes bad!

So, on to plan B......I have rice krispies and marshmallows; another two favorites. So, we are having rice krispie squares for breakfast. Notice the pan is half full; that's cause I didn't have enough rice krispies! Oh what a morning this has been! What's next on our agenda? Would you believe I am taking them to the dentist while my husband and I both get our teeth cleaned. There was no way that I could re-scheduled this appointment, so we are going to make the best of it. I've already warned the staff; so, we will see how it goes! What do you think I am doing tonight? Yup, it is Wednesday! Margaritas are $2.50 tonight!! Have a wonderful day.

Options......

We've started a new pattern line called, Options. This is one design from the series. The concept is pretty simple; the pattern is presented in black and white format. The fabric requirements are given as two main background fabrics. In this case, they are five shades of pink and five background fabrics. The star fabric is either white or black in this case and then a small gray inner border and a large floral outer border fabric. Imagine this quilt in red, white and blue, or vintage Christmas colors, or shades of blues or black, chartreuse and cream, or a very sophisticated palette of tonal fabrics. Can you see the beauty of Options? It is only limited to your favorite colors and your imagination. This is one of the projects that we will be teaching at the retreat. Very easy sew 2 1/2" strips! Won't this be fun?

I am a bad blogger!

It has been pointed out to me that I have turned into a very bad blogger!! I am chained to the sewing machine these past few weeks sewing my heart out for International Quilt Market and sometimes the blog gets neglected. I actually took a small break from sewing and finished painting! A house gets so beat up during home renovation! I painted it the same color; but, it has an eggshell finish. I know, small difference, but, huge on the wall. Anyway, with that being behind me, I've moved some things around and thought I'd share.......the photo below is a new rug that hangs by the dining room table. Love the colors!

Moved this basket, added the red gladiolas and it sits beside my antique kitchen cupboard in the dining room.

My favorite quilt rack now hangs in the hall in the dining room. I knew from the day the stud walls went up this quilt rack would eventually be hung there! It will be fun to decorate for the holidays! Check out my FAVORITE redware plate in the middle; it says: It's Just Another Number! I bought that for myself when I hit the big 50! I bought another plate that I have displayed that reads "Cheap for the Money"....now my husband thinks that one is just stupid; but, haven't you been shopping with your girlfriends and that phrase really makes sense?? Been there! How many of you can identify with that one?

In the foyer, I moved my collection of letters. I have to chuckle when I look at this! My husband hung the letters....because, he told me that when I hung them on another wall that I didn't get them hung right...they were crooked! So, I handed him the hammer and nails and told him to go for it! I heard a few nouns and verbs and some other words uttered besides while he hung these! I think at least one of the letters is hanging crooked, don't you? What ever!

Thus the reason for not blogging! I have an excuse! I can only share a block of the quilt below...(the one that involved the math meltdown!) The quilt turned out so wonderful; but, sorry...can't share anymore than this...one block of a 12 block quilt.

Here is another quilt that is off to the machine quilter! I will be taking three quilts to be machine quilted today! It feels good to have those behind me.

What's up for the rest of today? Well...I am working on another new quilt! I will share more information about it in upcoming posts. I can share that it will be a new series that we are beginning for Quilt Market, Options! It is going to be a lot of fun! Keep checking for updates about Options!

Don't you just hate it when......

I am having a math meltdown! Remember all of those fabric stacks that I had from the previous post? Well....those were not cut correctly! So, the new task is to trim them down 1/8 on two sides! ARGH!!! Do you ever have those moments? I normally construct a test block to make sure that I've gotten the math calculation down pat. I was so confident that I simply cut everything; and in the back of my mind, I kept having this thought that I shouldn't do that. I guess I should have listened to those random thoughts.

I have will have a companion today to help me. My little buddy, Nolan, is sick today and he decided to spend the day with grandma. The cartoons are on, he has his favorite two blankets, and just took some medicine! Here's to feeling good as new Nolan!

Flying Geese Everywhere

Today, is all about constructing flying geese! 182 to be exact! I've got my favorite patchwork tool...Mary Ellen's Best Press. Spritz some on, press, and wow! It gives the fabric some crispness, somehow, making it easier to press the seams and align the blocks. I LOVE this stuff! It is hard to describe, but, I think once you try it; you will be a loyal fan. I just ordered some more yesterday; in a lavender scent. Lavender is known for its calming properties! Here's to a productive day!

How was your week end? Mine was another busy one; not filled with a lot of fun stuff either. We managed to haul more rock and landscaping block to our back yard. We can say that project is behind us! The grass seed has been planted--three bags of it! We began the watering on Saturday, and then again on Sunday. I am so thankful it is raining today! No water duty for me. Have you ever looked at a bag of grass seed and looked at germination results? They boast something like 97%...but, why does it always look like 25% in my yard? Something I will never understand! I just want the dang stuff to grow!

I finished up a rug over the week end. I love samplers and this one was so much fun to do.

Today, is going to be all about Christmas! I've got two Christmas quilts to make! Thought I'd share my color selection below with you. Can't give too many more details as these are for magazines. Here's to a productive day!

Thursday news.....

This has been such a busy week! Whew! I need a week end to rest up. Easter found my family gathering for brunch. The bunny gave sugary candy; but, he managed to bring coloring books, markers, and stickers...and crocs and socks! I wonder how the Easter bunny knows exactly where grandma lives and what sizes they wear? Something to ponder over..........

Monday, Tammy and I headed up to Rochester to give a trunk show lecture to the quilt guild. We spoke at 1:00 and then again at 7:00. What a great group of women! They have a very large, active group. We had a wonderful time; the group was so warm and welcoming!

Tuesday included an afternoon visit to the pediatric clinic with the boys. Bad cough and colds...which brings me to Wednesday...it was a stay with grandma day! Don't want all of the other kids at daycare to get sick! Which finally leads me to Thursday...guess what I am doing today? NOTHING! I am exhausted! Funny how kids, even when they are sick, are still active! But, I do enjoy them!

I finished putting the binding on a new quilt for market and I thought I'd share it with you. In the new bedroom, I have a large vase filled with white gladiolas and I LOVE them! I've tried to duplicate those gladiolas in this quilt. Isn't it fun?

My favorite five year old spent the night! Out of the blue, he told his mom he wanted to spend the night with Grandpa and I (yikes...I thought we were OLD, BORING people; anyway I feel like that most of the time). A few years ago, we bought a blow up sleeping bag in a Cars theme. We don't use it often, but when the boys spend the night, we get it out. And if any of you are wondering why we didn't let him sleep with us, I say to you, have you slept with a five year old??? My word, they thrash about all night, sleep sideways, and when you least expect it, wham, an arm right in your face! Well, this blow up bed made so much noise last night, he kept me awake most of the night. You know the sound, that squish, squish all night with every move. I was exhausted, and still not able to sleep so at 2:00 I decided to opt for some Tylenol PM. I was pretty disgusted; I was still awake at 4:00 a.m. Finally, I must have fallen asleep after that, and I remember I was sleeping quite soundly until...6:00 a.m. my darling little guys says to me, "hey grandma, it's time to get up!" I am not much of a morning person, but, who could resist that? He is so happy and cheerful! I stumbled out to the kitchen with him, poured a bowl of fruit loops and watched him eat. He said he slept really, really good last night....cause there are NO monsters in our house! (I wonder if the sleep monsters were after me??)

Ah, yes, that is the TV in the background. He loves cartoons; and I do know that it is only 6:00 a.m.....and yes, that is licorice he is eating. I have every intention of spoiling him just like my grandparents spoiled me. It is fun!

Nolan loves Lily June (cat). I think the affection may be one sided;--notice the laid back ears! Yes, sticky candy and cat hair; great combination!!

Grandpa gave Nolan a ride home at 6:45. But, before the door slammed shut and my world return to the quiet normal; he said, "I think I'll spend the night again tonight grandma, cause I really, really love you!" Now, isn't that the very best way to wake up on a Friday morning? Nothing finer! Absolutely nothing!

We are setting record high temperatures! The robins are everywhere and spring is definitely here. The winter lasted forever, but, somehow it is all forgotten with glorious days like this! I whipped up a new Hanging on a Star wall hanging, Bloom to celebrate the day! I love the addition of the pink and yellow rick rack at the top of the large middle flower. This quilt makes me smile....super easy. It is posted on the web site, so be sure to look for it. Purchase a kit this month and the pattern is free. Very whimsical!

Spring is everywhere!

Signs of spring are everywhere here in North Iowa! The snow, nearly gone. Some remains in the ditches and small patches where it was moved for driveways, etc. The temperatures have been record highs! Yesterday, 75 and windy. What a crazy this year has been so far! I did a walk around what remains of my "gardens". Come on, grab a cup of coffee and walk with me.....

The photo below is daylilys beside the sidewalk going to the back of the house. Last year this was trampled by the construction crew. Hmmm.....what is it with men and being able to stay on a sidewalk??? Whatever....a perennial will grow back!

The photo below is my last remaining chives. I stuck them in an old work boot....Do you like chives? We love them! I've got plans for creating an herb garden in a large clay pot. Rosemary, sage, thyme, chives, basil, and lavender will grow there. I had to narrow it down to my favorites since I am going to keep them in a large pot. I just want something out the back door that I can run out and grab a few sprigs of to cook with. I can think of many more that I'd like to have, but, for now, I am going to try this smaller version.

And this photo, not exactly sure...but, I think I may have moved my giant alum plants here. Funny how some of those things have slipped my mind. I moved them a year ago; and last year with the construction and the massive dirt piles, I wasn't able to get out to see my gardens. It is fun to walk around and check them out. They are a weedy neglected mess, but, I know this year will be different. They will get the tlc they deserve.

And finally, rhubarb! I was planning all of the dishes that I want to make with this tangy plant. As a child, I'd grab the sugar bowl and head out to the rhubarb patch. The process was pretty simple. Break off a stalk...lick the end (come on...it has to be wet enough for the sugar to stick to it!)...dunk the end in sugar, and continue the process until the stalk is gone. Continue for as long as you like, or until the sugar bowl is empty.

Hope you enjoyed the tour....now it is back to work! Lots more quilting projects and deadlines. With a little luck, I'll have several new designs to post in the coming days; that is unless I decide to run outside and enjoy the day! Could you blame me?

Last Wednesday night, we celebrated a special five year old's birthday!!! Do you think he is having fun? Do you think his baby brother wishes he could wear that hat?

Check out the fun birthday glasses! We've been passing these birthday glasses around for a few years. Somehow, they look better on Nolan than they ever did on me.

And, what is the perfect present for a five year old? Well, a Spiderman bike!

Doesn't this picture just say it all? My husband summed it up well...who wants clothes for birthdays? Guess it was the best $70 I've ever spent...the expression on his face says it all.

There's nothing like it......

It's true! There is nothing like the first robin sitings of the season! Saturday morning; there were three in my backyard! What a welcome sight! The temperatures have warmed up and the snow is melting! Just when you think spring will NEVER arrive!

Today, is all about finishing. Remember that snowflake quilt.....well, sad to say, I still have the borders to add. I am just not that into winter stuff right now. But, I've made up my mind, this will be done before I go to bed tonight!! I am working on a Christmas quilt right now; and it is full of pinwheel blocks! The entire quilt is made up of different size pinwheel blocks. What was I thinking??? I seriously can't wait to take those two quilts to the machine quilter!

What is next on my list of sewing projects??
1)Halloween quilt
2) Spring quilt
3) a new block of the month program.

Think I will tackle the spring quilt next. Spring quilt market is approaching.

I started a new rug hooking project this week. It is one of those projects that I can simply loose myself in. I love samplers, love pineapples, so, you can understand my appeal for this mat. I went to my extensive wool stash and laid the colors out. I LOVE to color plan anything...quilts, rugs, rooms!

I coiled the wool and stitched it down for the centers of the pineapple. Pretty fun, don't you think?

Work on the newest design is coming along. Check out the photo below. It is very difficult for me to be enthusiastic about a winter/snow quilt when all I want is spring!! I think I will just buckle down today and complete this! I am pre-viewing borders. Who knows, I may end up going shopping for the perfect border fabric.

The weather is warming up! We've had temps in the 40's and RAIN!! I snapped a photo of the back yard. See the star in the back yard....well, it wasn't visible on Sunday. Completely covered in a huge drift of snow. I can actually see some grassy areas around the trees! Spring is coming!

Monday Updates

I finally have a "ta dah" moment to share! Here is a photo of the Potted Pineapple, completed and hanging above the fire place. I knew from the day we began work on the house; this hooked rug would hang here. It is a beautiful rug; and looks just perfect there. Don't you agree?

Here is a close up of the rug; but, it is NOT that bright...much more subdued. Lots and lots of detail on this rug.

We had an extremely busy week end at our house; but yet we didn't accomplish much. I finally got a new TV for my sewing room. It is a small flat screen that sits just the the right of my sewing machine. I can keep up with all my favorite shows now as I sew...just hope I don't sew over my fingers! It sits on a little bench for better viewing.

Check out with I did with the remote! Yes, it came with a holder; so, I hung it up on the cupboard. I seem to loose more remotes; and one somehow got tossed in the garbage during a sewing frenzy; and wasn't found. Thank goodness for universal remotes!! We'll see how often this one gets returned to the holder.

Whew, this has been a busy week. I am watching the boys for the remainder of the week; as the regular daycare provider is not able to watch them. What have we been doing to keep busy? Snow angels for Nolan! Check out the photos below. See the big mess in the upper left hand corner of the photo? That was his first snow angel...hmm....wonder what happened to her?

Practice makes perfect, right?

This afternoon, things are a little slower. Nolan is off to pre-school and baby Jax? Yes, taking a much needed nap.

As for myself; I finished the hand work on this new HOS wall hanging, Carrot Patch. Love the bright, cheerful colors! This design will be available as a pattern early next week. Nap time is almost over!

I've got something new to share!

Over the week end, I went to one of my favorite shops, Home Sweet Home. I've been searching for months now for the perfect accessory for the fireplace and I have finally found it! Check out the terrific hammered metal pot! I filled it with gigantic green flowers. I love the height of this; I love the texture of this, I love everything about it!

Soon, this hooked rug will hang center stage above the fireplace. Won't it be grand with the great flowers? This hooked rug is rather intense; but, I do think it will be the perfect addition. With a little luck, it will be hanging by the week end! Guess I won't be in the kitchen whipping up any tapioca pudding, will I? Whew!

Cooking 101

After pushing snow around --12 inches of new fluffy stuff--my mind turned to FOOD! I've had tapioca pudding on my mind. Somehow in my mind; I was justifying it; how bad could a little pudding be? I won't wreck the diet! It only consists of skim milk, 1/2 cup sugar, and two eggs.....the ingredients were set out quicker than I've ever done anything in my life. I could just taste this treat! Now, you have to know that there is a big BUT coming somewhere in this post, don't you? The first strike was when the box said to soak the tapioca pearls over night! Now, come on, I am already tasting this stuff!! I won't wait that long. The recipe that I found on line said that if your box of tapioca said to soak it over night; you can skip that part by simply decreasing the amount of milk by 1/2 cup....of course, I read that after the mixture had already boiled. The recipe said to stir it constantly until it boils; and then stir occasionally after that on very low heat. Next, I add two egg yolks, tempering the mixture just as the recipe called for. Ok...next comes these brown flecks appearing in the pudding mixture...what was that? Hmmm...somehow, I apparently hadn't stirred it properly; it was burned to the bottom of the pan! So, my next genius idea was to pour the mixture in a bowl and finish cooking it in the microwave. After all, the mixture needed to thicken, right? Well, that appeared to work. The final step was to fold in the egg whites to make the pudding extra light and fluffy! I think that was another down fall for me! Of course, I dumped the egg whites in and was folding, just the way Martha Stewart shows us on TV! I failed to read the part about adding that after the pudding mixture has COOLED! So, now, I have clumps of hard cooked egg white in the pudding. YUM! Are you almost getting sick at the thought of this?? Well, there is more....I took photos! Something that bad has to be shared, right? I won't be rushing to make that stuff again. I think from this day forward, I'll find new appreciation for those good tasting little snack packs of tapioca pudding. They truly offer instant gratification!

I've decided to steer clear of the kitchen today! No sir, I am not stepping foot in there today! I'll be in my sewing room; quilting a project that is due Feb 20! I love deadlines! Have a great day.

Today, we are in the midst of yet another heavy snowfall event! Tomorrow the forecast is for strong winds, so, a howling blizzard will probably occur. Thanks for all of the suggested names for the new quilt. However, I've decided I wanted something very unique! So, the new quilt has been named: Sadena's Garden. I am sure that leaves you scratching your head, but, I'll explain. I had a great aunt...you guessed it, her name was Sadena. She was neighbor's to my Grandpa and Grandma Nieman. I loved to visit her...she had white hair; always pinned up in a bun. She was such a happy lady and I also remember the many lovely perennials around her home. This quilt reminded me of her; happy and colorful. I simply had to pay tribute to this wonderful lady!

Just as I promised...a new quilt design. However the painting, moving furniture and cleaning; it took longer than I expected! With the bulk of that behind me, I've moved back into the creative mode. Check out the cutest ever wall hanging. It is a fun size, 30" x 54". The flowers are pieced, the flower pots are applique with a touch or super wide rick rack for fun. Antique buttons finish off the flowers. Isn't this just what we all need right now; bright cheerful colors and the promise that spring can't be too far away?

I need a little help however......for the life of me, I can't figure out what to call this quilt. We've used up all of the good names, and some we've used to death! Let's see....we've used Spring Blooms, Spring Flowers, Pretty Posies, Spring Garden, Grandma's Garden....you get the picture. Give me your ideas, please!! If you submit the name that we choose to use; you'll get the pattern for this quilt free! So, I look forward to lots of creative, imaginative names....please don't be shy!

One thing leads to another!

My idea started out small. I wanted to move a pie safe from my sewing room to the master bedroom. Take the cupboard from the master bedroom; put it in the living room. Take a cupboard from the office to put in the sewing room to replace the pie safe that held all my wool. The coup used to sit on top of the pie safe that is now in the bedroom with a TV on it. My original plan was to get rid of the coup; but, I had lots more wool than I thought I had, so, I turned the coup on its side and set it on top of two other cupboards. I think it turned out kind of nice. Check it out!

Wool! And, sad to say; this isn't my only stash of wool. I've got another cupboard full as well! I need to stop moving all of this furniture around and make plans to use this stuff up! I've got some ideas for rugs spinning in my head and I've got some design ideas for wool projects.

This afternoon I want to work on a new spring design that I hope to have updated on the web site by the week end. It is all about flowers!

Nasty Day!

It is one NASTY day! Check out the photo of my back yard....The visibility is truly ZERO in the country. The snow is being blown into gigantic drifts again. Funny how an inch of snow can become a blizzard when combined with 40 mile an hour winds. Good day for a bowl of soup and a day of quilting, don't you think?

I must share this great photo of my husband and the two grand boys....We watched them on Saturday night and they were as wild as ever! Here they are; reading a heavy equipment magazine. We love being grandparents; it is one of life's rewards for getting old; and we intend to enjoy every second of it!! All too soon these little guys will turn into young men with little to say!

Here's to a productive day of quilting!

Good Bye Snowmen.....

It is official! The snowmen have been put in storage until next year! Besides, it is time to decorate for Valentine's Day!! I've added a few garden accessories to the mantle in addition to my old tin heart. Something new always feels good in winter, don't you think?

In case you think I'm not devoting enough time to designing....I'll let you in on a new project that I've been working on for Quilter's World. Below is the color pallete. I really like the muted backgrounds and the vivid, earthy gold and rust fabrics. Can't share the motif with you or any more of the design. As the publication becomes closer, I'll share the quilt.

Nolan has been coming over after pre-school. Everyday he enlightens me with some quirp that leaves me howling. Yesterday was probably the best one I've heard. I told him that his zipper was down on his jeans....his response? "Ya, I know.....I did that at school; I was hot!"

I know...I've been absent; but, I just don't feel too chatty! (I know hard to believe) I've been finishing up projects. I have a cupboard full of kits (I know...what's up with that?? Sometimes I don't want to think and a kit is instant color planning in a bag!...I can relax and sew) At quilt market many, many years ago, I purchased this darling kit from All Through the Night. It is wonderful wool, which was supposed to be hand stitched...I changed the pattern and made it all fusible, machine blanket stitch. I still have the stick arms and the nose and eyes left for stitching. Then, add a backing and I can say this is done. It was very time consuming; but, so cute!

Next, came a Buggy Barn kit that I purchased so many years ago; the fabric could be considered vintage! It needs to be quilted. Looks like my machine quilter is going to be busy!

And this same kit had enough leftovers to make this little pillow top! I know...that really isn't finished; but, I can do that in an afternoon...after the quilt has been quilted.

I finished stitching this reindeer quilt together...I made one last year and gave it to my daughter and while I was making it; I did extra blocks so that both of the boys could have a quilt as a keepsake. Ready for the machine quilter!

Here is a Halloween table square! All I have to do is finish sewing the binding on......

What did I work on last week? This project that drove me insane!! I made 240 - 4" finished pinwheel blocks plus 12 - 8" finished pinwheel blocks. It was a kit; very cute...but, you know how a person can get into a project and think; why are they doing it this way??? The blocks were an over cut and then trimmed to another size. Guess that is ok if you are not an accurate with seam allowances, but, a total waste of time of you are accurate! I felt like I was cutting two entire projects...and when each block had to be re-cut...I made 960 cuts to make the silly 240 blocks! Plus, the initial cutting of the entire quilt! It wasn't a lot of fun; and that is probably why the blocks are sewn together; but, I might put it together next year!

Today, I found this little house quilt; and thought I can quickly finish this project.....

I've been cooking!

Much to my husband's delight, I've begun cooking again! He told me all along the kitchen remodel was going to be a waste of money. He tells everyone the only reason we have a kitchen is that it came with the house! Ha, not so! In addition to cooking; I've been making an effort to make healthy, low fat dishes. I got this one from Weight Watchers cook book, but, I've given the original my own twist and it got the husband's stamp of approval.

1 - 6.2 oz Uncle Ben's long grain and wild mix
1 large tangerine
1/2 cup chopped green onions
1/4 cup sweetened, dried cranberries (craisins)
1/4 cup slivered almonds, toasted

Cook the rice according the directions on the package. Transfer the rice to a bowl once prepared. Meanwhile toast the almonds, chop the green onions. Add to rice. Grate 1 TBS of rind from tangerine and add to rice. Add the craisins. Peel the tangerine and then cut the tangerine up into bite size pieces (don't forget to check for seeds and remove when chopping the tangerine). Add the tangerine pieces to rice mixture and stir to combine.

It is good!...the original recipe only called for the juice of the tangerine; and I thought it would be fun to have bits of the fruit in the rice. Also, the original recipe didn't use the seasoning mix that was included in the rice packet.

This will yield 8 - 1/2 cup servings at 184 calories...not bad. We had this as a side with fish for dinner this evening. Of course, my husband ate much more than the 1/2 cup serving size...I think he had about 6 servings.

The sun is out today; but the bitterly cold temperatures have returned. The snow is piled in huge drifts with eerie shapes.

I finished up a couple of projects yesterday, and I thought I'd share one with you.......

Isn't he cute? I know...after the picture of the hanging snowman a few posts earlier; this must have you howling! I purchased this as a kit at Quilt Market many years ago. The design is by Bonnie Sullivan, All Through the Night. He was fun to make! And he looks great in my collection

of snowmen that I've displayed on the mantle.

I did fill the snow blower up with gas yesterday and went out to knee high drifts. I managed it get the drive way cleared by dark. A few hours later, my husband finally rolls home. His day began at 5:00 a.m. I don't envy the job of the snowplow drivers today. Those snowdrifts are huge and many roads were completely blocked and closed waiting for the wind to subside. Here's to warm temperatures....no wind....no snow.....geez, I must be dreaming of another state!

The winds are howling! And the birds are hunkered down in the tree behind the house. Brr! I intend to have a "stupid" day and pretend I don't know how to fill the snow blower with gas....can't run it without gas, right? My excuse is that I really don't want to run it today; I am tired of it all!! Besides, I am not going anywhere today, so, the snow can stay where it lands; in a couple of hours, the wind will move it all anyway!

As promised; here is the table runner! I've decided to call this one Lemongrass. Isn't it grand on the table? So fun and very easy. It really brightens up the kitchen and with the addition of the tulips; looks so wonderful. This will be posted to the web site later today.

What, more snow???!!!

This is it! I've had it with winter! First the snow, then the rain, then the snow. We are driving in tunnels of snow! Then came the week of frigid record setting low temperatures. Now to add insult to injury; we are under another winter storm watch. The forecast is for 4-7" of more SNOW and then howling winds (a nice way of informing us of the impending blizzard) and then the week end is for more bone chilling temperatures again. I got the e-mail photo from a friend and I think it sums up my feeling of winter pretty good! Of course, many of you know that my husband works as the shop foreman for Hancock County. He had 52 hours of OVERTIME in the last two weeks! (Yes, that included Christmas Day and New Year's Day!--As you are on your way to grandma's house, remember to wave and thank those guys who keep the roads clear for you to travel on. They make a sacrifice as well as their families!) Hope you get a chuckle out of this photo. Come on SPRING!

New week, New Year

Here it is...2010! Remember when we were told of the computer crashes when the year 2000 rolled around? They all survived, didn't they? Doesn't that seem like it was a million years ago? Where does time go?

Have you made your resolutions for the year? How did you do on your old goals? I didn't do too good; but, I've made some new ones and see how I do on those!

The weather is mighty cold here in North Iowa!! We've been setting new record lows! Isn't that something to be proud of? 25 below zero is horrible; but, I am so fortunate that my job doesn't require me to go outside. I was watching TV this morning and the folks in NY were whining about it being 20 (yes above zero)....they have to get tough.

Today, I am planning on getting into my sewing room today to create something new for my table....I have a fondness toward green and black right now. (I wanted some Fiesta dishes in the Lemongrass color for Christmas...I wasn't a good girl, so, I didn't get them. I'll put them on my list for my birthday...there is always hope!) So, I am going to create a table runner that will complement these dishes that I pine for. With a little luck, I'll share my efforts with you tomorrow.

Well, Christmas and the Holidays are over! How was your celebrations? We had our family celebration Christmas Eve, which actually turned into a late afternoon celebration due to the weather!! Blizzard conditions were forecast for later that day, so, my dad drove up, Jen, Andy and the boys came from a few blocks away. All we needed was Tom. Finally around 4:30; he arrived, so the festivities could begin! The first thing on the list was a little eating...snacks and beer while the oyster stew simmered. Then, on to the presents! What fun! I checked the photos a few days ago, and they are so good, I have to share! Ok...check out this picture below.

See the boys, opening their gift....then, glance at my dad...what is he doing??? Playing solitaire!!! Now, that's the old Christmas Spirit for you!!!

OK...then, check out this photo....I must have heard Santa or the sleigh bells or something........

Can you believe it? Where has this month gone? Are you done baking yet? I wasn't going to bake this year; but, when everyone started to complain about missing their favorites....I caved!

I want to share one of our family favorites. This recipe comes from my mother in law. These were always on the cookie tray! These taste like a fig newton; only with more crunch and a little sweet/tart taste! I didn't think I'd like these until I took my first bite; about 15 years ago!! We enjoy them so much; we buy bags and bags of cranberries when they are in season and freeze them to make these delicious bars!

Cranberry Date Bars
1-12 oz. pkg cranberries
1 8-oz pkg chopped dates
1 tsp vanilla

Put cranberries and dates in saucepan and cook on medium low for five minutes; or until cranberries popped. (Cook, covered. I often mix in about 1/8 cup of water to keep the cranberry/date mixture from sticking.) When the berries have popped take off heat and add the vanilla. Set aside.

2 c flour
2 c old fashioned oatmeal
1 1/2 c brown sugar
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt

Mix together all dry ingredients. Melt 1 cup butter and add to dry mixture. Mix well--will be crumbly. Press about 1/2 into the bottom of greased 9 x 13 pan. Bake this layer at 350 for 8 minutes. Remove from oven, spread the cranberry/date mixture on top of the baked crust. Add the remaining dry crumble mixture on top. Bake an additional 20-22 minutes at 350. My mother in law used to make an orange glaze for the top; but, I've skipped that. Enjoy.
